During the Middle Age farmers became handicrafts by learning how to make objects by themselves. The first pewter smelters were based in Germany and they gathered in Guilds since late 1200's. They were called Kandler, Kandelgiesser, Kannenmacher or Zinngiesser. In Medieval cities each Guild used to have its own pitcher (Kanne) and this one represents the city of Basel (Switzerland).
